London photographer and trends expert, Bella Foxwell, is known for her love of front porch and door design. Making a successful career from snapping beautiful doors around our capital city, her world famous @doorsofldn Instagram account has racked up over 69K followers since launching in 2015.
“Through sharing my images with others and connecting with people on Instagram, I’ve realised how unifying front doors can be. There’s the well-known trope of doors representing new opportunities, but I think for many they also symbolise nostalgia, whether that’s from their childhood or the country or town in which they once lived.”
Speaking exclusively to Barratt Homes, Bella reveals the top trends to watch out for in 2020.
“Year-round wreaths and unusual door knockers are very on trend at the moment. Wreaths are the perfect accessory for city dwellers and those less green-thumbed among us (like myself!) and door knockers like bees, chilli peppers and pineapples add a point of interest to the front door and are fun way to show off the homeowner’s personality.
“Think about small changes you could make to add your personality to your façade as these make a huge difference to your home, and how you feel returning to it at the end of a long day.”
“Interestingly, this year I’ve seen some of my favourite brightly coloured front doors painted in more neutral shades such as grey and beige. A lot of people are also opting for pale blues and greens. Duck egg blue is proving to be particularly popular. This could signal a broader trend towards a more pared back aesthetic in the coming months.
“However, regardless of trends, I think the choice of colour is hugely telling of someone’s personality. A bold colour speaks of someone that wants to stand out – that is proud of their home and wants everybody else to know it. Having a brightly coloured front door isn’t the norm, which is what makes them so special. I hope more people will be inspired to take a paintbrush (and a brightly coloured pot of paint!) to their front door.”
“Lavender, clematis and roses are very popular flower choices this year. For the lucky few that have wisteria, they may find themselves subject to the #wisteriahysteria admirers! This is the hashtag dedicated to the short-lived wisteria season and is my favourite time of year. For a few weeks, Instagrammers across the UK madly dash about to capture the gorgeous lilac pendants before they’re gone!”
